A Prediction Market User Profited $436K on Bets Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A trader profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Market Signals Before News Break
Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
However the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are growing concerned.
A new rule presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
