Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
