The Worst Video Games of 2025, Per Metacritic

Across the internet, gamers are foaming at the mouth to post their rankings of the greatest releases of 2025. But what about the flops, the low achievers? It's time to take a moment to examine the lowest-rated games of the year, as determined by the aggregate scores from Metacritic. Are all of these games truly as terrible as their scores suggest? We shall see.

10. Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour

Aggregate Score: 54/100, Audience Score: 3.4/10

The early response to this pack-in experience were heavily influenced by its $9.99 price tag, with many expressing disappointment it wasn't a complimentary title like similar console launches. Critical opinion was quite mixed, from "crushing disappointment" to slightly kinder reviews that praised the polished software itself. Despite the controversy, the title proved to be a strong seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Metascore: 53/100, User Score: 3.2/10

Marketed as "not just a racing game," this driving sim from studios in Germany and Poland received overwhelmingly poor reviews. Critics noted that the game felt unfinished in key areas, especially in a year packed with high-quality racing games. In the eyes of critics, this underwhelming entry was better off left in the garage.

8. Bubsy's Purrfect Collection

Metascore: 53/100, Audience Score: 8.6/10

To begin with: the confusing colon usage is a silly strike against it. This anthology of SNES and PS1 Bubsy titles features a rude feline known for non-stop hacky one-liners. The consensus was that these games were mediocre in their time and feel dated with age. The notably positive user score is a baffling anomaly to the Metascore.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Aggregate Score: 53, User Score: 3.5

This manga-based fighting game was met with harsh criticism from both critics and the dedicated community. It was lambasted for a limited character selection and a minimal offering of features. Player sentiment was particularly vitriolic, with some stating a hope that the title's failure would be a warning for future projects.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Metascore: 51, Audience Score: 5.3

Hailing from the quirky Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this bike-riding title tasks players with collecting cute monsters. The assessment was that its attempt to recreate a *Katamari Damacy*-like experience was unsuccessful, coming across as more of a cash grab than a substantial series entry. Its short length combined with a $40 price tag was criticized.

5. Captain Blood

Aggregate Score: 50, Audience Score: 5.3

This title is a curious artifact from the past, seeing the light of day after a very long time in development hell. The developers opted to keep the game as an authentic experience of its time, accepting that contemporary players might criticize its dated design. As such, many reviews concluded that the interesting history of its resurrection was far richer than the game itself.

4. Scar-Lead

Metascore: 44, User Score: 2.4

This anime-art roguelike shooter modeled after games like *Returnal* failed to impress with critics. The main issues centered on bland enemy design, repetitive levels, and a forgettable story. A much-criticized system involving the outfit degradation was widely panned and undermined the game's potential charm.

3. Ambulance Life

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Think of the tense surgery games of the past, then take out the memorable characters. That, according to reviews, is essentially *Ambulance Life*. Critics found the ambulance-driving sequences to be a slog, and the treatment of its subject matter was criticized as being tone-deaf. The overall experience was deemed largely unsatisfying.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, User Score: 5.8

This shift away from the classic digital companion formula makes the franchise into a shopping simulation title. The result, based on critics, was a unsatisfying collection of basic activities that rapidly overstayed its welcome. Some reviews went so far as to call it one of the most disappointing titles available on its platform, noting a dearth of engaging content.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, User Score: 2.5

Positioned as a blockbuster open-world action game from a studio led by experienced developers, *MindsEye* was a catastrophic critical flop. Reviews savaged its lousy combat, dull missions, and a host of horrendous bugs. Several found it to be a regression compared to previous-generation games in the same genre. Among the overwhelming criticism, a few of positive user reviews found something to enjoy in the experience, serving as a rare vote of confidence.
