Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
